According to our latest survey, coffee dispensing issues, leaks, and inconsistent performance are some of the most common coffee machine faults. If you’re looking to invest in a coffee machine, buying from a top brand could help you avoid these problems in the long run.
Knowing which brands develop the most faults is essential when buying a new coffee machine. That’s why this year, in our unique customer longevity and satisfaction survey, we asked more than 6,997 Which? members and 3,003 members of the public to tell us if they are satisfied with their coffee machine and if they have encountered any problems.
Our survey data takes into account which coffee machines were reported to have faults and whether they had to be repaired or replaced as a result.
We’ve crunched the numbers from the biggest coffee machine manufacturers – including Melitta, DeLonghi, Krups, Sage and more – and calculated a customer score for each, so you know which brands are recommended by owners.

The three most common faults of coffee machines
1. Distribution issues (20% of all reported defects)
If your coffee is not dispensing properly, it may be because there is a blockage somewhere. This can happen more often if you use a very fine grind of coffee and in the worst case it can lead to coffee bursts.
If your machine has a portafilter, unclogging it with a long pin can help the coffee flow freely. Some coffee machines come with a pin for this purpose, which can also be used to unclog the steam pipe. If not included, any long pin will do.
The brew head may also need to be cleaned. Usually it can be rinsed off under the tap, but check your machine’s manual for specific instructions.
2. Water leaking/spitting (18%)
A leaking coffee machine can be due to a number of reasons.
If you are using a traditional espresso machine with ground coffee, be careful not to over-tamp the coffee (pushing it too hard into the filter basket) as the water may not be able to pass through. This can lead to a build up of pressure and cause water to leak from the portafilter once it is attached to the brew head.
A full drip tray can also overflow and make the machine look like it’s leaking, so it’s important to empty it regularly. Some machines have a “full drip tray” indicator to help you.
3. Inconsistent performance (13%)
It can be difficult to diagnose what is causing a coffee machine to work inconsistently, as it could be due to a number of factors such as faulty parts or even the quality of the coffee used.
Staying on top of descaling will help prevent limescale buildup and ensure your machine always makes great coffee.
It’s also worth checking the troubleshooting section of your coffee machine’s manual, as it usually offers solutions to common performance issues.

How we calculate the best and worst coffee machine brands
Who? contains a wealth of information on Britain’s favorite brands. Every year we ask Which? members to tell us about the appliances they own – from the likelihood they would recommend a brand to the reliability of the products once they bring them home.
This year 6,997 Which one? Connect panel members and 3,003 members of the public told us about over 75,000 individual products. We calculate a brand’s customer score, failure rate and proportion replaced or repaired based on the results of our annual survey.
Our investigations, combined with our extensive lab tests, allow us to recommend the best coffee machine to buy.
