Design and functionality

The Lavazza deséa has a compact and sleek design that will fit well with most countertops; its shape is narrow and slim, but it’s surprisingly deep, with the water tank positioned at the back, so you’ll need to take this into account when positioning in your kitchen. We liked the glossy off-white color, which contrasts well with the matte black of the rest of the machine, although the black and brown colourways are also attractive.

The main selling point for us on the desea is its milk frothing function – a feature that is not standard on most capsule machines. It allows you to prepare a cappuccino, latte or macchiato, and hot or cold milk froth to add to your coffee, using the milk of your choice, at the touch of a button.

The a modo mio capsules are inserted into the top of the machine to brew an espresso, long espresso, long coffee or a ‘free dose’, all delivered at the perfect temperature – choose from a preset or select your own. Then just adjust the cup rack to match your cup size.

Lavazza takes great pride in the silence of the desea, boasting that its “first-class quiet operation” is considered the most quiet in its class and will never exceed 43 dB; ideal for shared households or busy workplaces.

The machine is also equipped with a series of alerts: it will tell you when the used capsule drawer must be emptied (it has a capacity of 10), and when the water tank is empty. The control panel is pretty self-explanatory, with different buttons for coffee and milk drinks of different sizes, which are subtly backlit and beep when pressed.

Cleaning the machine is simple and convenient – and significantly easier and less complicated than any other milk machine we’ve tried. In addition it is really is calm!

For setup you will need to perform a quick and easy rinse cycle; the machine is delivered already assembled and configured, so all you need to do is plug it in and fill the water tank.

Lavazza offers a great selection of authentic tasting coffees from around the world to choose from from its selection of pods, each with tasting profiles, sourcing notes and strength indicators to help you choose your personal favorites. You won’t find the weird and wonderful flavored creations that some pod machines are known for with Lavazza, but every coffee we tried from their selection was much higher quality and more delicious than most capsules. We especially liked the dark fruity dolce lungo cap, which tastes fresh, sweet and strong, even in a large mug.

To make a milk drink, Lavazza provides a branded glass that you can fill up to the indicated mark with your dairy or vegetable milk of your choice before placing it on the drip tray and making your selection. The desea whips, steams and intelligently mixes the milk according to the appropriate recipe, giving you an expertly brewed cappuccino in less than a minute.

It’s actually really impressive; as mentioned, milk functionality is not common with pod machines. You may see long lasting milk capsules for some machines, or models that have an extra milk container that can steam milk, but these can be annoying, messy, and difficult to clean, so this design is really great. The cappuccino – or latte or macchiato – produced is also top notch: true barista-level coffee with tiny, velvety micro-bubbles. We are impressed.

Although the machine is not difficult to use, we recommend that you first read the manual carefully and keep it, as it can be difficult to remember what the different flashes of the interface can mean – descaling required, incorrectly positioned drawer or an error with the machine. The Lavazza deséa is quite small, but the water reservoir easily holds enough to make four or five coffees at a time – although that would be a problem if several people needed a latte …
