Benefits of black coffee: how much is really enough?


Coffee is undeniably one of the most consumed drinks in the world. Nothing prevents coffee lovers from experimenting and pairing it with a range of delicacies, drinks and even desserts. Most people can’t think of starting their day without a daily dose of caffeine. You may not have known it, but regular consumption of black coffee is linked to the promotion of good health. Experts have pointed out and highlighted the health benefits of shots of espresso or black coffee when consumed regularly and in moderation. According to ethnobotanist and author of How to Eat Better, James Wong, “Coffee is proving to be an incredibly rich source of heart-healthy polyphenols, containing far more than certain fruits and vegetables like blackberries and kale by portion”. But are we to believe these claims that tout the health benefits of good old Americano? Let’s find out.


Renowned health practitioner, nutritionist and certified macrobiotic health coach Shilpa Arora ND explains that black coffee is a powerful booster for brain activity. “It increases adrenaline in your blood and is therefore excellent as a pre-workout drink,” she notes. Some other notable benefits of consuming black coffee are listed below:

1. It contains antioxidants which can help avoid the risk of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and even dementia.

2. Black coffee can improve your mood and can also help keep depression at bay.

3. Moderate consumption of black coffee is also known to help improve your focus and stimulate your brain.

4. It can also help reduce inflammation in the body.

5. Moderate consumption of black coffee can promote heart health.

6. Harvard experts have found that coffee “protects against type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular health,” as reported in Harvard’s online journal, Harvard Gazette.

7. The dose of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties present in coffee can also help reduce oxidative stress.

8. “Coffee is very high in chlorogenic acid, one of the richest antioxidants,” Sanjiv Chopra, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, noted in the Harvard Online Journal.

9. According to experts from the University of Southampton and the University of Edinburgh, in a moderate study, participants who consumed one cup of coffee per day had a 20% lower risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma, the type of most common liver cancer.


10. Black coffee is fortified with minerals and micronutrients like magnesium, potassium, manganese and vitamins like B2, B3 and B5.

How many do you need?

Experts suggest that a person should not consume more than 400 mg of coffee per day. It is best to consume without cream and no added sugar which only adds calories to your drink.

As they say, too much of anything can pose a threat to health. Excessive caffeine consumption has been linked to triggering a host of ailments and health complications. Insomnia, headaches, dehydration, and bowel problems are some of the most common symptoms of high caffeine intake. “Coffee is not suitable for people with irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal problems because it can upset the acidic balance of the stomach. It has dehydrating properties and should therefore be consumed in moderation. people with hypertension should also keep a watch on their caffeine intake, ”Shilpa concluded.
