Moment of Jimmy Swaggart Zen

Boing Boing Blog

Xeni Jardin:
During a recently broadcast sermon in which he discussed his opposition to gay marriage, evangelical telepreacher Jimmy Swaggart said:

“I’ve never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I’m going to be blunt and plain: If one ever looks at me like that, I’m going to kill him and tell God he died.”

Someone please tell me how such an attitude is considered Christian? Whatever happened to Thou shalt not kill? Or even Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain? WTF? I cannot even begin to imagine how someone who’s supposed to be a believer could say such a thing. I don’t consider myself religious but this guy manages to offend me. This guy gives religion a bad name and he’s supposed to be a preacher?!?

Morphine Apparently in Your Head

Wired News

Researchers find that humans produce their own morphine. If naysayers finally believe it, the discovery could boost pain and addiction research. By Kristen Philipkoski.

And here I was thinking that it was already well-know that the brain can produce morphine-like molecules. Or are endorphins something entirely different? Maybe that’s what it is… What do I know?

Slow Friday

It’s a slow Friday, Labor Day is looming, so here’s a little game to get you in week-end mood!

Sunday morning reading

I managed to get up early enough this morning and got some reading done. Here is a couple of interesting articles:

  • Reason Online has a nice review of the themes explored by Masamune Shirow in the Ghost in the Shell universe, focusing on the first Stand Alone Complex season.

    An Unamed Anime Blog

  • The Village was a very disappointing movie for me: I thought it had a lot of potential but ended up just being silly. Discussing the movie with friends, I eventually managed to articulate what I thought made the movie a failure though it took some discussing to get to that point. It was therefore interesting to see that an article exploring M. Night Shyamalan’s filmmaking hubris mirrored my opinion concerning the movie. I also agree with one commentator’s suggested improvements.

Tricks of the Trade

I’m a pack rat for bits of information I will probably never use. So obviously, I find posts like

Happy Bastille Day!

It’s Bastille Day today. Going to celebrate at the French embassy in D.C. after work. Champagne!

Time lapse photography

I had the idea of doing something similar (with my friend Robert) to what Sam Raimi has in mind with his “century cam”. Except that my idea involved a much smaller time frame (a single year, one picture per week) and scale (a single spot: initially a spot was to be chosen in Great Falls park). I have always been fascinated with time-lapse photography and the passage of time, though in the case of Raimi’s project, if it ever gets done, the time scale is such that no-one currently alive would see the end result. Check out Third View as well! Via worldchanging, one of the best weblogs I know of.

Now for more pictures though not time-oriented: iPod does Paris! Via Cult of Mac.

Wired has a nice article on photographing the analemma.
