In the US for a couple of weeks

I’m going to spend a couple of weeks on my old stomping grounds (the DC area) in the United States, visiting friends and attending a wedding. Today is the bachelor party. It’s more like a bachelor day really, as we’re going to go white water rafting in West Virginia! The weather seems alright so far and it rained a lot the last couple of days so there should be enough water to have some fun!

Unfortunately, as my camera is not waterproof, I won’t be taking any pictures during, which could have been a lot of fun.

Mood, illustrated…

They say a picture is worth a thousand words… Here’s collection of pictures, from recent posts of blogs I read, which quite accurately describe my recent mood…

Let’s start off with The Argyle Academy:

Now, it’s not all bleak and doom. Maybe, a little case of grey-colored glasses…

Kaneda’s bike?

It was the end of the 80’s and as a dorky teenager, I was fascinated by Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, and in particular, its main character’s bike. This childhood’s dream of a bike seems eerily close today with the EV-X7 prototype electric bike. Looks like I won’t have to wait until 2019 after all!

Heroes Season 2…

… has failed to keep me entranced so far. I still haven’t watched last Monday’s episode. Apparently, I’m not the only who thinks that the beginning of season 2 has been pretty weak, as even Tim Kring (the show’s creator) admits as much. Hopefully, this will be addressed soon as it’s quite a shame to see a good show turn rather un-interesting, not to say plain bad!

Well, according to what I read, episode 7 was supposed to get the show back on track and it didn’t disappoint. I’m still not sure about the season but, at least, this last episode More >

Credit history

In our all-consuming society, credit cards receipts are mementos of the past, a proof of existence when little more seems to stick. Modern equivalents to Proust’s madeleine. $70.70, the bitter-sweet memory of a first date. $15.74, fond memories of a party these beers were for. I don’t want to be defined by what I paid for but I can’t escape these traces of my life, soon to be shredded, never to be seen again. Will the associated memories disappear as the grinding teeth tear their physical manifestation apart?

Beware!

The Problem with Wikipedia:

The potentially enormous loss of time (I don’t consider it ‘wasted’) that can occur when starting to look at Wikipedia is something that I addressed in one of my very first posts… and is perfectly captured in the above drawing! I haven’t posted here in a while, so summoning memories of my beginning in blogging might start the engine back up!

Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford

One of the best speeches I have heard is now available as a free video download from iTunes! Do yourself a favor: grab it and watch it, you won’t regret it! [MacRumors]

On taking chances

One of these (too numerous) articles opened in a NetNewsWire tab, waiting for me to read it: Why do you work so hard? Well, finally got around to reading it and it’s pretty good. It nicely sums up some of the thoughts I have been ruminating lately. If you’re working impossible hours and don’t really enjoy your work, you should maybe read it. Making money for the sake of money itself is not getting anyone anywhere. Considering how my life has been recently, maybe it’s time I took a chance and do something with my life?

Bastille Day

Yesterday was Bastille Day. As is the tradition for French nationals residing in the D.C. area, I went to the French embassy to get a fix of French gastronomy otherwise unavailable to the general public here. Saucissons, pâtés, cheeses, breads, wines, Champagne, patisseries galore! Oh yeah, and the traditional speech of the ambassador!

It’s always nice to go there especially for the friends I get to see there that I otherwise barely see. On the other hand, it seems like the French embassy makes a point of making you feel at home, what with the inefficiency of air conditioning, which More >
