It has been more than a week since I last posted a tune of the week. Here’s the new one: The Faint – Violent.

I am going to see The Faint live at the 9:30 club as part of my 5 upcoming concerts. I discovered The Faint a while ago via a sampler CD that I got at a Placebo concert (once again at the 9:30 club!). The sampler had a remix of their song, The Conductor. The song was really interesting so I decided to download songs from the band to check them out. Since then, I have bought their Danse Macabre album plus its associated remix album, Danse Macabre Remixes.

I had originally planned to present you their Agenda Suicide song because it resonated with how I currently feel about my work (the drones work hard before they die) but I realized that it’s available for download on the audio section of their website so I decided to present Violent instead.

Violent has been one of my favorite song from the Danse Macabre album. It’s quite to the point with its aggressive beats… The song starts rather calmly despite the sinister cello but grows in intensity as the syncopated beats start pounding more and more until the open aggression of the drum break 3:11 into the song followed by very metallic sounds (the opening cello, sampled, slowed down and ring-modulated?) before driving the song into a bass frenzy over which Kraftwerkian pads float. The song beats you senseless as would the loan collectors it speaks about. Inescapable as the violence. Listen to it loud and lose your mind as you ears start to bleed! :)

Overall, Danse Macabre is very somber as its title implies with its tales from a decadent society of rumor-spreading, posing and faking, oppressed individuals unable to escape the cold de-humanization of modern life. The only redeeming grace – music, the only character in control – The Conductor, the only one able to escape the bleak monotony by letting the music flow freely…
